Visiting, Distinguished MAIA Professor and UM Ambassador in Residence A. Peter Burleigh has been a consultant for the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia and a senior political advisor on Nepal to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter since July 2006. Peter has made seven trips to Nepal since that time, two of them with President Carter. The Carter Center has been involved in Nepal, at the invitation of the government and the Maoist leadership to observe and assess conditions leading up to a planned, but now twice postponed, constituent assembly.
During his late November 2007 visit to Nepal, President Carter submitted a "Compromise Proposal for Nepal", representing a road map or game-plan of political compromises necessary to create an environment conducive to a free and fair election in that war-torn country. Ambassador Burleigh expects to continue his consultation throughout 2008.
Ambassador Burleigh has also been asked by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies(a U.S. Department of Defense related academic institute based in Hawaii) to lead a weeklong workshop on the United Nations Security Council for a group of Vietnamese diplomats and academics, taking place between December 11th - 14th. Vietnam has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and its two terms will begin in January 2008. This will be the first time in its history that Vietnam has served on the UNSC.
Ambassador Burleigh also continues as a consultant to the National Intelligence Council (NIC) on subjects such as the United Nations, South Asia and relations with the Third World.
